Libraries… 9 (Forgotten) Secrets to Amazing Savings!

Did you know that libraries could save you a ton of money EVERY month????  Seriously!  “How??” you may ask.  It’s super easy!  Go sign up at your local libraries!  City, County, whatever library you have nearby!  It doesn’t stop there, make sure you find out about their online programs–they often will connect with other surrounding libraries.  Here are 9 ways your library can save you money!

1.  Books.  Duh.  Oh yeah, magazines are generally available to borrow, too.

2.  Online:  Many libraries have e-books and audiobooks that can be downloaded over the internet and through their apps on your smartphone.  So, that means, not only can you physically check out books and audiobooks at the library, which already has an abundant amount of literature to choose from, but you have access to even more books online!!  I’m a huge audiobook fan, so I love this option!  I am able to go to my county library’s app to search their library system for audiobooks according to my interest, download it (find free Wifi, of course) and then I can listen to my book while I am driving, at the gym or anywhere without using more data on my phone.  It’s awesome!  Trust me, you won’t run low on book options anytime soon!

3.  Movies:  Another thing a lot of people forget about at the library is its movie collection.  That’s right!  Most demonstration-767983_1280libraries have a DVD collection for you to check out some of your favorite flicks!  Although some collections aren’t huge, it’s still normally a decent choice for you, your friends and kids to pick from, including full seasons of popular TV shows.  This will save you from being dollared to death by Redbox (actually, most Redboxes have increased their rates so it’s more than a dollar for a movie now!); watch a new movie every weekend!

4.  Music CDs:   The library is a great way for you to check out CDs that you love, as well as music that you would not listen to normally.  The best part is you don’t have to commit to cd-158817_1280purchasing before you know if you like it or not. Check it out to really check it out!  There are usually many different genres that you can find at the library, so save your money and don’t buy CDs, iTunes or other individual songs or albums. Free is better!

5.  Clubs:  Most libraries have book clubs for you to participate in. These can be a fun way to socialize in a safe environment while doing something you enjoy: reading!  They also encourage great conversation and debates.  The clubs are usually free, so join away!

6.  Kids program:  Especially during the summer, spring break and other vacation times, libraries will offer programs for kids (a variety of ages).  Sometimes it’s like a camp, sometimes it is a reading program and sometimes they will have speakers or performances that kids will enjoy.  Once again, this is a fun activity that is in a safe environment (and often free with membership!).

7.  Arts and Crafts:  From time to time, libraries will have arts and crafts opportunities. Often they will showcase local talent, and other times they will teach fun crafts. The cost is usually nominal, if there is any cost associated with the activities.

8.  Discounts:  Some libraries are partnered with local museums and other cool places.  Ask your librarian or check your local library’s website to see if they have any partnerships that will offer you free or discounted museum tickets or other fun opportunities.  Hey, it can’t hurt to ask, right?!

9.  Wifi:  FREE WIFI!!!  Many, many libraries offer free Wifi to members, and most have computers available if wifi-647215_1920you need a place to logon.  You can download your audiobooks and ebooks using their Wifi for a double win!

After taking a quick peek at my local county’s library, here are some examples of cool stuff available:

  • Jongleur Jugglers–A juggling duo

  • Teen Activities–Summer reading program that allows them to keep track of what they read while earning raffle tickets to be used at the FanFest Finale (ie party)

  • Pride Party–LGBTQ Month celebration

  • Auto Reference Center–Provides detailed care and repair tips, maintenance guides and more.

  • Juneteenth Celebration–Music, food, exhibits and prizes celebrating the end of slavery

  • Reptile Discovery–Reptile education

I want to point out that I found all of the above activities on my local library’s front page of their website!  I didn’t have to go digging or anything, so just imagine what else is going on if I were to go to the calendar of events!  Wow!

Do you live in a small town or does your library not offer too many fun things to do?  Are you looking for a booktux-161406_1280 club or a kid’s club, but they aren’t available in your area?  Don’t let that stop you!  Volunteer at the library and help bring some fun activities to them!  If you are looking for a book club, start fun!  Maybe an artwork showcase?  Reach out to your local artist and organize the event!  Most of these types of things don’t cost a lot of money, if any, but yet invite so much joy and entertainment, not to mention learning and networking experiences.  Be proactive and bring the fun to you!  You’ll be surprised by how many people will appreciate it and come to help (and play)!

What kinds of activities and fun stuff does your library offer?  Maybe your ideas will inspire others to start something new in their area!
