May 5th, popularly known as Cinco de Mayo, is celebrated in Mexico of course, but it is widely celebrated by many, many people in the United States. According to History.com, the holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, which was during the Franco-Mexican War. Hard to believe, but Cinco de Mayo is a fairly small holiday in Mexico–it’s Americans who have developed it into such a big deal with parades, parties and adult beverages. Of course, it’s hard to pass up a good Mariachi band! For the record, Cinco de Mayo IS NOT the same as the Mexican Independence Day.
OK, enough history! This isn’t a history blog, but I did want to throw in a little bit of fun facts, but now I’m ready to get to the meat of the holiday! Just because it’s a time to party doesn’t mean you have to pay top dollar. With special holidays and traditions comes discounts and free stuff!
